Beautiful Lake Wilcox
As the paddle rhythmically dips in and out of the cool, clear water you can hear the distant squeals of children playing by the water’s edge. Are you way up north in cottage country? No you’re just a few minutes from your home in Oak Ridges.
Lake Wilcox is a secluded secret in this family-friendly neighbourhood in Richmond Hill. Carved out at the end of the last ice age, it is the largest kettle lake in the Oak Ridges Moraine, a 1,900 sq km area of rolling hills and river valleys.
Beginning in the late 1990s, the Town of Richmond Hill began a project to restore the Lake to pristine condition. Local parks, trails, trees and wetlands make the surrounding area a welcome respite from busy city life. Boating, fishing, water sports and skating are just some of the activities available.
The Oak Ridges Moraine Eco Centre at the nearby community centre provides a variety of programs, workshops, displays and interactive activities for those interested in learning more about the natural environment. What a wonderful resource for families.
