Not your mainstream movie theatres

We love movies! Year round Toronto is an excellent city for every type of film you can imagine and offers a wide variety of specialty theatres if you want to see something a little different. Here are some of our favourites:

TIFF – Located in the TIFF Bell Lightbox in the heart of the Entertainment District, it screens a wide variety of genres year round as well as during the renowned Toronto International Film Festival, held every year in September. There is often the opportunity to meet the stars, directors and writers. Discounts for members, comfortable seats and an appreciative audience. Lots of local restaurants to eat afterwards.

Hot Docs – Another theatre with its own Film Festival specializing, as the name suggests, in documentaries. Located at Bloor and Bathurst and even has it’s own bar. Traditional theatre layout with stalls and an upper gallery.

Varsity Cinema – We love splurging on seats in the VIP theatre, so spacious! Even though it’s owned by Cineplex, it screens some of the more hard-to find films The Manulife Centre location means it has underground access to the subway, a real bonus in winter.

Carlton (Magic Lantern) Cinema – At Yonge & Carlton Street, the $5:00 Tuesdays have got to be the best bargain in town and again with easy subway access.

Regent Theatre – One of the few truly neighbourhood movie theatres, in the heart of Davisville Village on Mount Pleasant Road. Dating from the 1920’s, with renovated seating, it’s a fun step back in time.
