Take a break from winter in downtown Toronto

Toronto bills itself as A City Within a Park and that applies even in the heart of downtown.

Although it’s less than a 15 minute walk away from The Eaton Centre, Allan Gardens is a hidden gem, often overlooked even by long term Toronto residents. This urban, tropical oasis is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core.

Downtown Parks in Toronto

Allan Gardens is one of Toronto’s oldest parks. It was named after George Allan, a prominent local politician who donated five acres of land to the city for a public garden in 1858.

Now a leafy, mature park, it offers a fenced off-leash area for dogs and a new children’s play area, but is best known for the16,000 sq ft Conservatory featuring rare tropical plants from all over the world. The cast-iron and glass domed “Palm House” is designated a Heritage building and is just one of six greenhouses, each displaying plant collections from different climactic zones. One greenhouse is designated especially for children and regularly runs programs with local schools.
