DRIVER’S LICENCE

Anyone moving to Ontario must obtain an Ontario driving licence within 60 days of arrival.  Although visitors may drive on their existing licences for longer, if you are taking up residence in Ontario the deadline is 60 days.

Full details on the Ontario graduated licensing program is on the Drive Test  Ontario website.

If you are moving from another province, from the US or a limited number of other countries, you may be able to exchange your driving licence without taking a test.  Through a reciprocal program, you will surrender your existing licence in order to obtain an Ontario one, and then upon your return you’ll do the same thing in reverse.  You will also have to take a simple vision test at the time of your application, so if you wear corrective eyewear for driving ensure you have it with you.  A photo is taken of every applicant.

There are just 3 Drive Test offices in Toronto where you can exchange your licence and they are always busy.  It’s best to arrive early and be prepared to wait 1-2 hours before you are seen.  You will need to have with you:-

  • Driving Abstract from your current licensing authority dated within 6 months, showing the date your license was issued

  • Your current valid license

  • Your license or the abstract should  show that you have at least 2 years driving experience within the last 3 years (ie 2 years without a suspension)

  • Passport

  • Cdn$75 fee (can be paid by credit card)

It is highly recommended if you are moving from the US that you bring an original driving abstract from your DMV.  Frequently the Drive Test office is unable to pull up records from State licensing offices, or the details available are insufficient.  This information may take a couple of weeks to obtain prior to your departure.
